There are lots of picturesque villages, towns and hotspots. Situated in Ambleside we are located in arguably the most popular Lake District town. Though, that is not to say that Keswick isn’t worth a visit during your stay with us. Keswick, a very scenic 30 minute drive north is a picturesque town that sits beneath some of the Lake District's largest, most spectacular peaks including Skiddaw and Blencathra.
In terms of entertainment there is the popular Keswick Pencil Museum and Whinlatter Forest Visitor Centre, a great place for walking and cycling, there is even a high ropes course! If the arts is your thing, then we’d suggest heading to Theatre by the Lake, Keswick’s local arts centre that hosts a variety of arts classes, theatre shows and art house cinema. Love a beer or two? Keswick Brewery run tours and have a shop to purchase the renowned local ales. There is also the Lakes Distillery, the largest Whiskey Distillery in the UK. Here you can take a tour to find out how their world class Whiskey, Gin and Vodka is produced.
Kendal is on the edge of the Lake District, located 30 minutes south of Ambleside in the beautiful area of South Lakeland. Kendal has a vibrant arts and culture scene, you could visit Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Kendal Brewery Arts Centre, The Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry or the Quaker Tapestry Museum to name a few.
There is a fantastic, long and interesting heritage to Kendal. When visiting it is worth exploring the many pretty cobbled yards and tucked away streets. Kendal Castle is definitely a must see, this awe-inspiring ruin dates back to the 13th Century and housed some famous historical figures including Katherine Parr, Henry VIII’s last wife. The castle sits upon a small hill and offer stunning views of the town.
