Do you have any plans this weekend? If not, then be sure to pop the Festival of the Fells in your diary! This fantastic event runs from Thursday 22nd September to Sunday 25th September in Ambleside and the surrounding area.
It’s a mountain, outdoor activity and cultural festival, especially created to appeal to fell lovers of all levels, but there is certainly something for everyone. We’re really excited about the festival. Not just because our sister hotel, The Regent Hotel, is involved in supporting it (although we’re very proud of that!) but because it’s another superb event that puts Ambleside on the map.
There’s a fabulous packed itinerary across the three days of the festival, including abseiling, ghyll scrambling, trail racing and triathlons, as well as guided walks and swims. All sounds pretty exciting, doesn’t it? But not to worry if you’re not an outdoor adventurer, there’s plenty of laidback activities too, such as cinema, music, comedy and talks.
A highlight of the festival is the ever-popular duck race. Set against the glorious backdrop of the Fairfield Horseshoe in the idyllic setting of Rothay Park, hundreds of ducks will race down Stock Ghyll to the finishing line near Miller Bridge – and it's all in aid of Alzheimer's Research UK, the charity supported by the organisers of the race, Ambleside Kirkstone Rotary Club.
A number of fantastic prizes have already been kindly donated by local businesses, including a cash prize of £200 for the winner. If you fancy your chances, the first heat starts at 2pm at Rothay Park (from the Vicarage Road entrance, turn immediate right and follow the path beyond the open area used as a football pitch to the start of the race).
Festival of the Fells has been organised by the group Ambleside Together, which was formed in January 2016 to promote the town in the wake of the devastating December 2015 floods.
We’ll see you there!
